The Friends of Teesside Archives is a registered charity (No.1082369) and so is able to apply for external grants.
Money, of course, is essential. Although our volunteers provide their services free of charge, we have to raise money to buy the equipment we use, such as digital cameras, computing equipment, scanners and special lights. Materials to repackage records are always in demand by the conservator and we try and help to raise this money if needed. Archival standard packaging materials are expensive and include such items as acid-free storage containers, envelopes, map boxes and negative sleeves.
The money needed for larger purchases normally comes from external sources such as Lottery grants or from other Charitable Trusts.
A very important reason for raising funds is to be able to purchase historic documents and other records pertaining to the local area. The lack of available funding in the past has led to the loss of documents from the region that were part of Teesside's heritage. The records of the Sir William Turner Almshouses, for example, were bought by a private buyer for £5000 and a collection of shipping records and directories was sold for £480. These are unlikely to return to Teesside and are not available to the public.
We did secure funding to buy the Sotheran Collection. This collection contains over 2500 photographs from the late 19th Century to the 1970s, covering Redcar, Saltburn, East Cleveland, Middlesbrough and parts of North Yorkshire.
In case other records come up for sale, we need to build up our reserves. To facilitate this, we have a separate account called the V.I.P. Fund ('Very Important Preservations'). If you would like to make a donation, please contact us.
How you can help
The society's running costs are covered by the members' subscriptions. We greatly value our membership and the financial security they provide. If you are not already a member, why not join us and help protect our local heritage?
We also raise funds through our raffles at social events and so the donation of good quality raffle prizes is always welcome, as is buying lots of tickets!
We accept financial donations as well! If you would like to make a donation, or can help with fund raising in any way, please contact the relevant Committee Member. Please note that your donation could be eligible for Gift Aid. If you are a UK tax payer, then your donation could be increased by 28% if you complete a Gift Aid form when making the donation.
